Rossendale Ramblers - About Us

About Us

The Rossendale Group is a small but very enthusiastic branch of the Ramblers association. We number around 100+ members of which a goodly percentage regularly take part in the twice-weekly walks organised by the committee and walk leaders. We are often joined by members from other groups and non-member visitors seeing what we have to offer, a practice that is encouraged by the RA.

Most of our walks are organised on a yearly basis and the walk leaders go into a huddle in September to plot their favourite walks and devise new ones for the coming year. Many of the walks exploit the beauty of the local scenery but often we go further afield to the Yorkshire Dales, the Peak and Lake Districts or North Wales. We share transport wherever possible so that those without cars are not disadvantaged, sharing costs with charges negotiated with the driver of the car. Several weekend away per year have become popular and for the last two years a week abroad, Madeira and Slovakia, seems to be setting a trend. Two Christmas meals, one New Year meal, a BBQ, cream teas after the Wednesday walk, we use any excuse to socialise.

Our main activity of course is our walks and this coming year, 2009, we have a total of fourteen leaders and half of them are now from amongst the ladies, all keen to share their knowledge and experience of the great outdoors. The friendliness and conviviality is infectious with few rules beyond caring for the countryside and the safety of our group. We do not blow whistles and issue orders willy-nilly, just look out for one another with guidance and encouragement.
