Our April weekend away began on Friday the 16th. From our various b & b's, and youth hostel. The 15 met at the Greenhead Hotel for the two excellent evening meals
Keith led a 12 mile walk on Saturday. Parking up at Steel Rigg Car Park.
Ken left us to do the shorter option - he would meet us at the end of the walk.
The 14 headed away from the wall around Hound Hill to Gibbs Hill, and on to
Greenlee Plantation. We then took a permissive path to Green Lee Lough, having our elevenses in a bird watches hide.
Continuing on passed West and East Stonefolds where we joined the Pennine Way for a short distance to Cragend we followed a bridleway to Kingscrag and then joined the wall at Sewing Shields. Following Hadrian's Wall path over the Crags there was splendid views to the North. Shortly we reached Housesteads Roman Fort where the party enjoyed an ice-cream. The walk then became a little tough, with a considerable amount of up and down, but it was all worth it as we enjoyed good views of Crag Lough below us as we walked along the top of the Crags.
Our evening kicked-off with the customary Rossi-Rambler's trick of ‘pinching' chairs from around the bar to seat our 15 rowdy lot round an undersized table for pre-dinner drinks. We then took our places in the dining-room being allocated to two long tables
Sunday Walk - 7 miles
Starting as Gilsland we followed the remains of the wall to the gap described as the Watershed of England. From here all the waters drain to the west coast or to the East and the North Sea. We left the wall at Turret 47 and headed north to Barron House and on to join the River Irthing. More permissive paths led us to the Military Firing Range. We left the tarmac road and dropped down into the Irthing Valley to view the Crammel Limm Waterfall. We now followed the valley back to the Gilsland Spa
Hotel and crossed the river by the stepping stones.
Not a drop of rain fell all weekend, the sun came out intermittently and the wind followed us along the way blowing-away the cobwebs. After an hour in the pub we all went along our merry way - rejuvenated after our grand little break.
