Eleven optimists arrived in Patterdale, hoping the weather forecasters had got it wrong, heavy rain had been forecast, and it was raining heavily when we arrived. It was on with the waterproofs from the start.
We couldn't see Place Fell, our intended destination, so we debated our options and decided to start the walk in reverse, starting from Side Farm and walking North along the shore of Ullswater towards Howtown, where,if it was still raining, we could catch the Lake steamer back to Glenridding, or if by a miracle the rain had stopped, we could continue up and over Place Fell, North to South.
On our way we met one or two drenched walkers, some carrying canoes!! the campers were deserting the camp site, and the rain continued to fall, As there didn't appear to be any steamers on the lake, and everyone was wet through we decided to abandon our original options, and reluctantly retrace our steps, not some thing we do very often,.
We managed a quick lunch during a lull in the weather then carried on back to the very welcome tea shop at Side Farm.
